I helped to match breast cancer survivors with artists who then created works of art from the volunteer’s body casts.

Canary in the Coal Mine

(Inscribed inside cast)

by Myron Brower

In treacherous tunnels chill and deep
The brave canary sings her song.
Trusting her our souls to keep
Midst poisoned fumes and toxic seep,
Our wary hearts would sing along.
Her melody rides on the air,
Sustaining us through darkest night;
Resting us from our despair,
Wrapping us in Mother’s care,
Telling us that all is right.
Armed with Nature’s knowing eye,
Golden glory standing bold;
Breathing in what we deny,
Her silence screams a warning cry.
She pays the price, her story told.
